Design Inspiration: Charley Harper

Charley Harper (1922–2007) was an artist from Cincinnati who specialized in vector-like paintings of wildlife, mostly for nature-based organizations. He has such an amazing eye for giving his subjects an abstract look that conveys a lot with simple shapes.

Flickr continues to be an awesome resource for designers, and it's so vast you never know how much cool stuff you'll find. Through fffound and various blogs, I've stumbled upon some amazing stuff. For example, this group pool called • flashback • houses its members' collections of retro illustrations, movie posters, ads, movie stills, magazines and other random stuff.

all lookin' like a biker gang from Akira

This is a scene from one of the more obscure straight to video anime shows out there. The quality of hand drawn animation in late 80s-early 90s anime has always impressed me, especially when you have a good key animator.

I want to see more of this show, but unfortunately it's called "Download," so it's a bit hard to look for on the internet.

Information Aesthetics

Infosthetics is a cool blog showcasing information graphics used in various sources: news websites, magazines, conferences, etc. These artists have implemented so many great little ideas to convey information. I love this stuff.

Ho-la Ho-la Ho-la

Parra is an illustrator/designer from Amsterdam. Most of his work is done for his own band, Parra Soundsystem, and his clothing label, Rockwell.

I love the cases he made for ipods and Macbook Pro. So awesome.

His artwork is great. People like him and So-Me are like a revival of Peter Max and Push Pin Studios. Rounded shapes in bright colors. In other words MY FAVORITE THING EVER. His absurd character design looks best when it's animated.
