One of my designs is featured on heyash.com! I'd sent this to them last year when they were putting together their DVD for season 2 and were asking for submissions. It's a bunch of vector drawings of scenes from each episode of season 2. They didn't use it back then, but Ash contacted me recently saying they loved it and would like to use it for their website header.

Kazumasa Nagai is a Japanese designer who did a ton of promo poster work during that time. I found a few galleries of his work at Lifelounge, Pink Tentacle and Flickr. There were also a few books based on his work, though they're hella expensive.

The ‘trick’ is the camera collects images at a rate of 210 per second – but the film is played back at 30 frames per second. So, every seven seconds of footage that you watch corresponds to 1 real second. At least at the start, one real second is plenty of time for someone to move into, then out of, the camera’s field of view, but isn’t enough time for them to really do much: hence, the frozen effect. It breaks down towards the end not because I’m doing something clever with the frame rates (captured or replayed), but simply because the train was stopping!"

U&LC is online!

Fonts.com has started scanning issues of U&LC, a typographic journal that started in 1974 and ran for almost 30 years, and releasing them online for download. This is huge news for me because I've been a fan of Herb Lubalin and his work on the newsletter ever since I first saw pictures from it 10 years ago.

They apparently started doing this in October and have 11 issues up so far!

I'd never heard of influence maps until a few weeks ago, but thanks to Harveyjames I realize what a great exercise this is. Really made me think about what inspires me artistically.

Basically you make a grid of however many squares and fill them with images of things that influence and inspire you. Use more squares/larger images for bigger influences!

Design Inspiration: Superbrothers

I've taken way too long to post about Superbrothers, a pixel artist from Canada. I remember falling in love with the look and feel of his videos when I discovered his website last year. His characters are very abstract but he still maintains a high level of detail, and the animation is incredible.

I looked to Jordan Mechner‘s Prince of Persia and Eric Chahi‘s Out of this World as well as the original Super Mario Bros, and I began to make some discoveries of my own. I began to avoid curves and outlines, deploying ‘jaggies’ carefully, keeping the focus on carefully calibrated fields of color and a sparse approach to pattern and texture. I experimented with less cumbersome stick-limbed pin-headed pixel rigs, which has since become my aesthetic preference. Eventually I began to see a distinct style develop – it seemed fresh, clean and absolute.

MD Wine Festival poster entry

I recently entered a poster contest for the Maryland Wine Festival.

I went with a "wine pouring" theme here, with the colors going from red to white wine. The green background is supposed to bring to mind spacious vineyards or whatever. Surprisingly, I like how it came out, despite the fact that I crammed the night before :P

CO-OP, a show about videogames, recently went to a live format and with that started using a new logo! Even better, it was designed by the creator of Fez, a game I blogged about way back when.

Why is this logo new/old instead of just new? Because it's what indie game designer Phil Fish originally came up with wa-hay back in the day when we were first slapping our show and our business together!

That original CO-OP logo was deemed by some powers that be that it wasn't "gamer" enough, but we've always had a soft spot in our collective heart for it and with the launch of a show that will hopefully involve you as much as it does us, it honestly felt more fitting.

It's really awesome, and it's interesting that this "new" logo was actually created first and they liked this one all along. Even though their first used logo is really creative, this one is much more so! I love its rounded, unified clover-like form. All the letters just fit together perfectly.

I can't find much information on souloff, but she has an awesome body of work online. She manages to make vector art look like it was sketched out with Sharpies. Looks inspired by fashion design too - the line work is really carefree.

Design Inspiration: Leandro Castelao

Leandro Castelao is an illustrator from Buenos Aires. I like that he's virtually created a visual language; his style can be translated to anything. Grain Edit described it as an exploded view of Charlie Harper's style. It's as if he puts an x-ray up to things and sees that they have wiring and circuitry inside.

In addition to housing his portfolio, his website also has a shop where you can buy prints!

Akutou is a freelance designer and illustrator.
His drawing style and choice of vibrant colors remind me of So-Me. I can tell he totally gets the look of the 80s - he's really good at using the blues, pinks and yellows to maximum effect. Check out his blog for inspiration. Also music videos (if he hadn't posted about Future Cop I would have never been exposed to their awesomeness)!
